Archivists, researchers and experts came together for a special event to discuss the importance of recording the history of the energy industry. The seminar brought together 40 experts to discuss practical and professional issues involved in documenting activities in the oil and gas industry. The seminar was developed to mark the fourth anniversary of the founding of Capturing the Energy, a project co-led by the University of Aberdeen, Special Libraries & Archives department, to work with companies to ensure the management and eventual archiving of their key records for the benefit of current research and future generations. Speakers included George Mackenzie, Keeper of the Records of Scotland, Professor Alex Kemp of the University of Aberdeen, Siobhán Convery, Head of Special Libraries and Archives, David Powell, Business Archives Council Scotland and John Holt, Researcher. The seminar was followed by a reception and a film night where a selection of films from the National Library of Scotland’s Scottish Screen Archive, depicting the history of the oil and gas industry, were screened. Comperes for the night were Brian Nixon, Chief Executive of Decommissioning North Sea and Professor John Hume from the University of Ulster. The evening was well attended and attendees included the Lord Provost of Aberdeen and Lewis MacDonald MSP.

2010

March
1 March 2010 Business Archives Council Scotland Scoping Survey completed and available to view. This major scoping survey has made some key recommendations which will be considered in the coming months.

2009

November
CTE had an information stall at the Oil & Gas UK event, Share Fair 11, which was staged at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 4th November.

October
12 – 13 October. Inaugural meeting of the European Oil and Gas Archives Network, Stavanger, Norway Archivists from countries as far afield as Norway, Denmark, Italy and Hungary gathered in Stavanger to hold the first meeting of a new European initiative to raise awareness across sectors of the importance of oil and gas records. A second meeting, to be held in Spring 2011 in Stavanger, will concentrate on “Appraisal and selection of records within the Oil and Gas industry”. CTE had a stall at Offshore Europe 2009, which was staged at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre between 8th and 11th of September. There was also an information session for invited guests including presentations by CTE members including University Archivist, Siobhan Convery, and Professor Alex Kemp, Chair in Political Economy at the University. http://www.offshore-europe.co.uk/

July
2009 saw the launch in England and Wales of a National Strategy for Business Archives. Funded, amongst others, by The National Archives, the Society of Archivists and Business Archives Council it aims to “raise the profile of business archives, ensuring they are utilised by business and research alike and that future collection are more representative of the UK’s diverse economic activity.” The launch of the strategy at a reception held at the House of Lords also saw the publication by the National Archives (Kew) of Corporate Memory - A Guide to Managing Business Archives. This document is aimed at businesses and features case studies of UK companies who exploit their archives for competitive advantage. A new website, hosting by the Business Archives Council, entitled Managing Business Archives, was also launched on the same day aimed at those who manage and care for business records. One of the case studies was that of the Frigg project and CTE members attended the launch in London. For more information see the Business Archives Council of Scotland.

31 October 2008 - Scotland’s Energy: From Coal to Renewables – the Story since 1945 (PDF). Papers will be delivered by a number of Capturing the Energy steering group members at a one-day conference in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, sponsored by The Business Archives Council of Scotland and Glasgow Museums.

August:
27 August 2008 - Papers were given by Siobhan Convery and David Powell at the Society of Archivists annual conference at the University of York. Each year the conference attracts an international gathering of archivists, records managers and conservators.
